If you have a promotional budget for your “big” Website (or business) but no budget for your secondary site/business, you may be able to occasionally drop references to your secondary interest in promotional materials. Think of a well-written press release that intrigues the reader and brings them to your site. You may have space enough in the last paragraph to mention that you are also involved in another business or avocation.
It’s important to distinguish between schmuck paragraphs that are just trying to get links and legitimate side notes that provide more information about you. A press release is not supposed to be “the” story; it’s supposed to inspire people to did deeper and tell more of a story on their own initiative.
The Internet makes it easy to distribute press releases but if you assume people won’t read them then you’ll end up just thinking of press releases as “easy links”. In fact, you’re wasting the value of a press release if you only use it for links. Not to mention deprecating the collective value of whatever press release service you use.
If you don’t know how to write a good press release you should work with someone who has both the experience and the critical savvy required to craft very helpful press releases. These documents can and do win readers and send visitors to Websites. More importantly, a professionally written and managed press release will never find its way onto the Web until AFTER the media have had a chance to build their stories from it.
When you are legitimately reaching out to the media through a publicist or marketing department you want your press releases to tell YOUR story; because if there is no media interest in your latest “we hired so-and-so” press release they may still be intrigued by the fact that you also happen to run a top-ten falcon dancing Website.
Create opportunities for your marketing step-children by mentioning them wherever possible in your primary marketing materials and spiels. The point is not to take the focus off the main sites — the point is to show people that you have a rich and diverse set of professional interests and experiences. That way you become a much more interesting person (or company).
